MAHALIA JACKSON ~ Summertime/Motherless Child

Mahalia Jackson born Oct. 26, 1911, New Orleans, La., US died Jan. 27, 1972, Evergreen Park, near Chicago, Ill. Mahalia Jackson, 1961. The Bettmann ArchiveAmerican gospel music singer, known as the “Queen of Gospel Song.” Jackson was brought up in a strict religious atmosphere. Her father’s family included several entertainers, but she was forced to confine her own musical activities to singing in the church choir and listening—surreptitiously—to recordings of Bessie Smith and Ida Cox as well as of Enrico Caruso. When she was 16 she went to Chicago and joined the Greater Salem Baptist Church choir, where her remarkable contralto voice soon led to her selection as a soloist. Jackson first came to wide public attention in the 1930s, when she participated in a cross-country gospel tour singing such songs as “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” and “I Can Put My Trust in Jesus.” In 1934 her first recording, “God Gonna Separate the Wheat from the Tares,” was a success, leading to a series of other recordings. Jackson’s first great hit (eight of her records were to sell more than a million copies each) was “Move on Up a Little Higher,” which appeared in 1945. All the songs with which she was identified—including “I Believe,” “Just over the Hill,” “When I Wake Up in Glory,” and “Just a Little While to Stay Here”—were gospel songs, with texts drawn from biblical themes and strongly influenced by the harmonies, rhythms, and emotional force of blues. Jackson refused to sing any …

Answer by Mary
Chicago is a HORRIBLE place to drive if you don’t know your way around and if you aren’t used to lots of traffic! Parking is terribly expensive. Public transportation, on the other hand, is very, very good, and quite modest in cost. I suggest you skip renting a car.

If it helps any I am from a depressed urban city. I will be the first of the second generation kids in my family attending college. I have a cousin at the university of pittsburgh who has made a huge impact at the school. I will be applying early to all of the schools after my first marking period grades, which usually come out around the first week in november, which will also be an amazing boost in my gpa if I can achieve a 95 average.
I will mention my city, my circumstances, my cousin, and much more in my essay to try and win the admissions team over with emotional appeal.
And btw, i was at University of Pitt Saturday and they mentioned that the average gpa for the incoming class was only a 3.5/3.6
Thank you

Hey bud, here to return the favor!
Ok, I feel like this is a great question for me to answer since I just gone through the college admissions process. So from my I’ve seen, it seems like your extracurriculars are outstanding! You should be very proud and the admissions office from all of your preferred universities will look highly upon you. Having said that, with your EC’s and class rank, you will no doubt get accepted into both Howard, Temple, and West Virginia University. All of these schools have high acceptance rates (+50%) and have lower SAT requirements. In addition, like the person above me said, affirmative action will help you. So that’s the good news! However I’m not so sure about both Rutgers or Pittsburg. You said you have a low SAT school, in addition you have both a marginal GPA (better hope it’s a 3.34 unweighted) and a marginal ACT score. In order to be competitive at both these schools, you should have a composite SAT score of at least 1800 and a GPA of around 3.5 (unweighted). Although once again, you have awesome extracurriculars so that will definitely balance your marginal test scores and GPA. Lastly, you failed to mention the exact rigor of your classes. Honor courses are great, but be sure to include to AP’s in that course load to. Colleges love to see you push yourselves to the limit while still being able to succeed. Also be sure to include a community college in the area b/c out of state schools can be really expensive!
I hoped I was able to help you!
